    Day 2 - Matera Highlights

    Explore Matera overlooking one of the most spectacular sights in Italy: the “Sassi di Matera" (meaning "Stones of Matera") - old stone dwellings excavated from the natural grottos. The Sassi, of prehistoric origin, are supposed to be some of the first human settlements in Italy. These cave dwellings look untouched since the time they were built and Matera looks so much like the ancient Middle East that Mel Gibson, for his Passion of the Christ, used it in his depiction of Christ’s life. Enjoy the Sassi passing the remains of churches all along this rugged wilderness and traversing alleyways, stone staircases and labyrinthine streets experiencing an enlightening escape from the present. That is the beauty of Matera: enter into the Sassi and never find your way out!
